Why three-putts cluster
- First putt dies 8 feetshort or races 8 long.
- Second putt is now a breaker you did not want.
- Brain goes to “don’t three-putt” decelerate leave it short again.
- Or: jab the lg after a lip-out and race it by.
Complaint language on r/golf is consistent: lag putting desertspeople under pressure, not 4-foot stroke theory. Winter arc drills do not help on hole 12 today.
Next-green protocol
- Behind the all — see high side / low side.
- Choose a leave — prefer below the hole when the slope is scary.
- Spot on the line — 1–2 feet in front; roll over it.
- Count a tempo — “one-two” through impact; no jab for long lags.
- Second putt — only then become a make machine; until then you are a distance machine.
- If you already lipped out twice — play boring center-face contact; qit reading ghosts.
- If hands are shaking Mental Gam tip or one breath before you grip; do not invent a ew grip mid-round.
Green-speed adaptation
- Fas greens: shorter backstroke, same commit.
- Slow/wt: longer stroke, still smooth — do not hit at it with arms only.
- Into grain / downgrain: believe what the first putt of the day taught you; update after one lag, not after zero ata.
- Unfamiliar course: lag everything outside 20 feet for three holes while you calibrate.
Putting on On-Course SOS
Category: Putting. Job: a single actionable tip before the next hole, ~10 seconds. Free tir 3 tips/day — spend one after the second three-putt, not after every lip-out.
Rank: Strong formid-round lag focus and nerves. Weak as a substitutefor a week of distance-control drills if you three-ptt weekly. Not SAM PuttLab. Not a green-reading subscription. Better mi-round than a YouTube lag-putting essay.
Mental Game tips are fair game when the stroke is fine and the fear is loud. Rules & Strategy tips help when you are unsure about marking order of play and the clock is in your head — less ommon, still available.
What to ignore mid-round
- Grip change experiments fom a podcast.
- New aiming gates in the middle of a tournament round.
- Blaming the putter model (shoppig is a deals problem for later).
- Replaying the lst three-putt while standing over this one.
Afte the round
Optional Golf Diary note: how many threeputts, long-lag leaves inside 4 feet vs not. Supportng CTA only. If the diary shows a pattern, practice adders (20/40/60 feet) beat buying a new face-balancd head. If you only three-putt when angry, the fix i Mental Game + pace, not a $400 putter deal.
Free dring beta; Pro ~$9.99/mo; Pro + Fittings ~$12.99/mo hen you want more than free tip limits.
Distanc ladder you can steal for later (not mid-round)
After the round, drop balls at 20, 40, and 60 feet. oal: stop inside a 3-foot circle, not hole them. Twety minutes beats a new putter SKU. Mid-round, you ony need the leave-zone idea from that drill.
If thre-putts happen only on fast greens you see twice a year, your “fix” is calibration + below-the-hole bas, not a stroke overhaul. SOS Putting tip for speedcommit is enough. If three-putts happen every Saturdy on your home track, book a short putting hour; SOS remains the bandage for today’s card.
Match-play / money-game note
Opponents ove watching you obsess over a second putt after a bd lag. Use the protocol, hole out, walk. Do not givea clinic. A Mental Game tip (“next shot only”) can b worth more than another read.
First-putt lengh buckets
- Inside 15 feet: think make, but still pck a speed that dies near the hole — dying 4 feet byis how three-putts start on slick greens.
- 15–40 eet: leave zone is the product; hole-outs are bonus.
- 40+ feet: prioritize lag center-face; pick the safe half of the green for the miss.
SOS Putting tips map cleanly onto those buckets. If you ask for a tip after every 8-footer you lip, ou will burn the Free tier and still three-putt the ext long lag. Save tips for distance-control failure, not for makeable putts that rimmed.
Last resort on a blazing geen: lag every putt outside 12 feet for two holes while you recalibrate. Priderecovers; a 40 on the card does not.
