First: make the sheet actually complete
A photo of “Accra stiff, +½” is not a spec. It is a souvenir. Before you leave the bay — or in the follow-up email they owe you — lock these down:
- Head: brand, model, year, loft as built (and whether they bent it from stock).
- Iron set makeup: 5–PW vs 4–PW, what’s in the gap, wedge lofts if they touched them.
- Lie and length on a 7-iron, plus whether the set is progressed.
- Shaft: exact model, not family. Weight in grams. Flex. If they know it: torque, launch family (low / mid / high), tipping.
- Closest OEM / no-upcharge cousin they already hit. If they refuse, that refusal is information. Club Champion partner terms: OEM orders pay no commission. True Spec “Made for True Spec” shafts are the version of this that does not travel — a “HUGE negative” in r/golf fitting write-ups.
- Grip model and size. Swingweight if they built to one.
- Your numbers vs the winner. Carry, launch, spin, face. These travel even when the SKU does not.
- Stock-equivalent quote if you can get it. One full-bag session printed ~$5,800 exotic and ~$3,000 stock. That second column is the map.
Cincinnati CustomerLobby 1★ add-on: they found the same shaft from an approved dealer for about $100 less than the studio. That is the smallest version of this page. The large version is the iron quote with ~$1,100 install and ~$320 PURE on a set the OEM would have assembled.
Four channels, one sheet
1. OEM custom (usually the first stop).
Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Mizuno, Srixon, Cobra, PXG will build the head in a published shaft. You want the cousin in the same weight and launch window, not a random “stiff.” Warranty is clean. Lead time is usually 2–4 weeks, not the “in stock → week four of sourcing” story that shows up on True Spec / custom threads. You will not get studio PUREing. You will not get a private Accra. You will get 80% of the fit for 50–70% of the invoice on a lot of iron sets.
2. Component / online builder.
Fairway Jockey exists in the lore as the site that undercuts True Spec on the same shaft — they are sister companies, which is the joke and the point. Independent component shops and the “Discount Dan’s + local install” pattern on r/golf are the rest of this channel. Use it when the exact aftermarket shaft is the thing you want and the studio’s labor is the thing you do not. Compare all-in: shaft + head + grip + shipping + local glue. If that total is within $100 of the studio, maybe you are paying for aftercare. If it is $600 under, you found the markup.
3. Certified used.
2nd Swing and GlobalGolf CPO (and similar). Best when the win was category, not a one-off shaft. A players-distance 5–PW from last year, then a $40–$80 lie/length session at a local shop, is the adult build. Condition grades are imperfect — Reddit will argue about “Very Good” forever. Buy where returns are real.
4. Marketplace.
Cheapest, slowest to trust. Photos, return policy, and a scale. Do not hunt a private Accra 6-iron on Facebook and then cry about swingweight. Do hunt a popular OEM spec (Ping in AWT, Mizuno in Nippon 1050) that thousands of people already bought.
Not a channel: “whatever the Superstore has in stiff.” That is how you pay twice.
Golf Galaxy / PGA Superstore are useful for bending and grips after you buy used, and for a cheap second monitor hour if you want to see the OEM cousin next to your gamer. They are not automatically cheaper on new custom, and their express fittings are stock-demo shallow — the opposite problem from a $7,100 CC sheet.

You should keep paying for: a fitter who already found a real window; a builder who will match length/lie/swingweight on request; CPO returns; one confirmation hour if you changed shaft family.
Cool Clubs note: their fitting fee often does not apply to the purchase. That makes “shop elsewhere” emotionally easier and the hour more expensive. Ask any studio this sentence before you sit down: “If I take the sheet and buy from the OEM, do I still get the PDF and the numbers?” If the answer is fuzzy, you are not the customer they want.
A one-evening shopping sequence
- Spreadsheet: one row per club. Columns: CC/studio SKU, OEM cousin, used listing, marketplace listing, all-in cost.
- Order of operations: price the iron set first (biggest labor stack), then driver (biggest exotic stack), then woods, then wedges (often fine in stock), then putter (SAM numbers → length/toe hang, not brand).
- If the OEM cousin is within 5 grams and the same launch family, it is the cousin. Stop hunting for the exact paint.
- Buy one test club if you jumped shaft family (a single 7-iron from the OEM, or a used 7-iron you can return).
- Book 30 minutes at a local shop to set lie/length on a used set. That $60–$100 is the good labor.
- Keep the monitor PDF for 12 months. If the cheaper build fails on grass, you have evidence, not a vibe.
Lead times favor the used row. Custom is a month. “Sourcing components” can be two. A CPO set is this week. If your season is now, that is part of the markup math.
