What that $4,000 actually is
Studio menus and forum quotes are not the same number. Club Champion’s published full-bag fitting has sat in the $325–$400 range in recent years (often discounted to $100 if you buy custom clubs the same day). Single-club sessions run about $125–$175. The sticker shock is almost never the fee. It is the build.
A typical four-figure iron or full-bag quote is four stacks taped together:
- Heads at retail. Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Srixon — list price, not last year’s closeout.
- Aftermarket shafts. Accra, Graphite Design, Fujikura Ventus (the real one), Oban. Recurring r/golf theme: $190-per-iron shaft line items, or a driver shaft that costs more than the head.
- PUREing / SST alignment. One r/golf write-up had golfers thinking PUREing was “$35 for irons,” then learning it was $35 per club — over $300 on a set. Club Champion owns the PUREing process. That is a product, not a law of physics.
- Labor, grips, and the “A-grade shaft” story. A Cincinnati-area CustomerLobby 1★ and several r/golf iron write-ups put install in the $110–$150 per club neighborhood. One iron quote around $3,400 for 4–PW + GW included roughly $1,100 in install and $320 to PURE. Skip PURE and the same poster still saw about $3,000.
None of that means the fitting was fake. A good fitter with TrackMan and a huge head/shaft wall can find a better launch window than you will on a hitting mat at Golf Galaxy. The commercial model is the problem: the fee is a loss leader. The engine is the build. Club Champion’s own partner terms (public on their pricing page) are blunt on one point — OEM or direct-from-manufacturer orders pay no partner commission. Aftermarket shafts, PUREing, grips, and in-house builds do. You do not need a conspiracy theory. You need to read the incentive.
True Spec runs a cousin of the same model. r/golf write-ups there complain about “astronomical” full-retail heads plus aftermarket shafts, plus “Made for True Spec” shafts you cannot price-shop at an OEM. Fairway Jockey — True Spec’s sister — is the site golfers then open to see the same shaft cheaper. Cool Clubs is the other premium peer: fitting fees that often do not credit toward the purchase, so you pay to be told what to buy, then pay again.
Independents are not automatically saints. A $99 median entry fitting (Club Fitting Directory’s 2026 crawl of 234 shops) can still upsell a $350 shaft. The difference is the fee is usually the product, and most owner-fitters will hand you a spec sheet you can take to an OEM or 2nd Swing.
The complaint is not “fitting is a scam”
Paraphrase the themes; do not treat one review as a verdict.
- No budget conversation. r/golf (Ashburn and other locations): the session jumped to the most expensive shafts. Even after a golfer said a $350 shaft was not in budget, there was “no effort” to show a comparable OEM option.
- Quote shock, then pressure. CustomerLobby 1★, Sandy Springs: a $7,100 full-bag number, “I think you’re insane,” and a used-car closer — “What’s going to take to get you into a set of clubs today?” Same review: “Lexus dealer… sold me a Lamborghini.”
- Fee-as-hostage. r/golf, 2024–2025: golfers bought irons they already regretted because they did not want to “waste” the $400. That is not a fitting outcome. That is a sunk-cost trap.
- Dismissive after “I’ll think about it.” Same Bay Area thread: the room changed when the golfer declined to buy on the spot.
- The other side is real. Plenty of golfers leave Club Champion or True Spec hitting a tighter window and never look back. If you want ball-flight validation and you have the cash, a great fitter in a big matrix is still the gold standard. This page is for the person who paid for data and got an invoice they cannot live with.
PGA Tour Superstore STUDIO and Golf Galaxy sit on the other end: cheaper or waived fees, thinner shaft walls, more “sales associate who also fancies themselves as an armchair coach” (the language that shows up around big-box fittings). GolfTEC is lessons-first; fittings are often a door into a lesson pack. None of those solve a $4,000 quote. They just fail in a different direction.
What to do with the spec sheet tonight
You walked out with the only part that transfers: loft, lie, length, shaft model / flex / weight / launch window, grip size, and (if they printed it) swingweight. Use it like this.
1. Ask for the stock-equivalent sheet if you do not have it.
One full-bag write-up on r/golf put the aftermarket bag just over $5,800 and the closest stock-shaft bag around $3,000 — same fitter, same day, because the golfer asked. If nobody printed that second column, email the studio and ask. A fitter who refuses is telling you the product is the upcharge.
2. Rebuild the same head at the OEM.
Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Srixon, Mizuno, Cobra, Ping — custom shops will build the head in a no-upcharge shaft or a modest OEM upcharge (real Ventus / Tensei / Diamana, not “made-for”). You lose in-house PUREing and the studio’s build QC. You gain $800–$2,500 and a warranty that goes through the manufacturer.
3. Price used and marketplace on the same model year and the last one.
A 2023 players-distance iron in regular steel is often $500–$700 certified used and less on a marketplace. If the fitter’s win was category (players-distance, mid-size, mid-launch 110g steel) and not a one-of-one Accra, last year’s head in the right shaft profile is the adult purchase.
4. Do not PURE a set you have not hit for a season.
Alignment services are a fine extra on a shaft you already know. They are a bad line item on a first custom set you might resell in 18 months.
5. Decide the only question that matters:
Did the monitor show a category win (lighter shaft, weaker loft, flatter lie) or a brand win? Category wins travel. Brand wins are how a $400 morning becomes a $4,000 afternoon.
