Two products, two business models
Club Champion’s published menu (2025–2026, promotions move): about $125–$175 for a single category, about $325–$400 for a full bag, often $50–$100 if you buy custom the same day. You get a standardized process, a large demo wall, and a fitter whose year depends on shafts, PUREing, grips, and in-house builds. Partner terms on their pricing page: OEM / factory orders pay no commission. That does not make every fitter a villain. It tells you why the exotic column prints first and why r/golf’s recurring advice is “pay for the fit, shop the sheet.”
CustomerLobby and r/golf themes you should walk in knowing: $7,100 for 14 clubs and a used-car close (Sandy Springs 1★); $4,000+ recommendations after a $400 fee that was “NOT FREE”; a $350 shaft that stayed in the conversation after the golfer said it was not in budget; four driver shafts in 90 minutes and an invoice for a $450 shaft they did not agree to buy (Cincinnati 1★); iron quotes around $3,400 with four-figure labor. The other half of the internet hit the ball better and paid gladly. Both can be true in the same chain. Location and fitter variance are the hidden spec.
Online fitting is a form plus a catalog plus (if it is any good) a budget. No monitor. No closer. No Accra wall. The honest versions of this are:
- BagBuilder — questionnaire (Quick Fit ~16 questions / ~2 min, Full Fit ~37 / ~8 min), named recs, new + used + marketplace prices. Free fittings in beta.
- FitMyGolfClubs — spec grades on the clubs you already own. Excellent “is my bag broken?” tool. Not a priced shop list.
- GolfLens — questionnaire + review graph. Free; email gate for the full ranking.
- True Path — free whole-bag AI recs. Thin public review history; treat as a second opinion, not a lab.
- Dialed.golf / Smart Golf Fitting / GolfSPEX — need launch-monitor numbers. These are after Club Champion (or any bay), not instead of it.
True Spec is Club Champion’s cousin, not an online option. GolfTEC is lessons plus a thinner matrix. Superstore STUDIO is the retail monitor in the middle: cheaper than CC, deeper than a phone, shallower than a 65,000-combo wall.
Who should start online
Start on a phone if most of these sound like you:
- You have never been fit, or you were “fit” into whatever was in the demo barrel.
- Your ceiling is “a better iron set,” not “a blueprinted 14-club exotic build.”
- You want to see last year’s equivalent and a used row before anyone says “the shaft is the engine.”
- You cannot get to a studio, or you can, but you refuse to pay $175 to discover you are a regular 50–60g human.
- You already own a decent category and you need gapping / “what to replace first,” not a launch window.
- You want a spec-ish starting point to take into Club Champion so the hour is a test, not a wander.
Online is also the right second move if you already have a CC sheet and you are in the “buy elsewhere” camp. The studio gave you a window. The website gives you a $649 used iron in that window.
Who should book Club Champion (or someone like it)
Book the studio if most of these are you:
- You will spend $1,500+ on one club or $3,000+ on a bag and you want the ball to prove the SKU.
- You need a profile your big-box store does not stock — true aftermarket, odd weight, or a combination you have already failed to find.
- You want SAM PuttLab, not a guess at toe hang.
- You like the idea of one shop standing behind glue, PURE, and a next-year lie tweak.
- You can say a budget in the first two minutes and walk if they ignore it.
Even then, you do not have to buy Club Champion. The better version of “who it’s for” is: Club Champion is for the hour. The OEM, an independent, Fairway Jockey, 2nd Swing, or the used market is often for the order. Read the sister page on taking specs elsewhere before you nod at a $5,800 aftermarket bag when the same fitter can print ~$3,000 in stock shafts — a real r/golf full-bag split.
If you have a strong independent nearby (median entry ~$99 in the 2026 Club Fitting Directory crawl, same class of TrackMan / Foresight in most shops that advertise a monitor), that independent is often “who it’s for” instead of Club Champion: fee as the product, buy where you want, same data. Use CC when you need the wall or you do not have that independent.
A simple fork (write your answers)
- Do I have a launch-monitor file?
- Yes → Dialed / a builder / shop the known window. CC only if you still need more matrix.
- No → continue.
- Is my budget under $1,500 for what I will actually buy this year?
- Yes → online + used. Bay only to confirm one club if you are nervous.
- No → continue.
- Do I already know my category (players-distance, 110g mid steel, 50g mid driver)?
- No → online first, then decide if a bay is still worth it.
- Yes → bay (CC or independent) to pick a winner; shop the sheet.
- Am I willing to say “I am not buying today” out loud?
- No → do not sit down at a commission-driven studio. Do the online fit and an OEM custom.
- Yes → enjoy the matrix. Take two columns home (exotic and stock).
That is the whole comparison. Anyone ranking “online #1, studios dead” is lying. Anyone ranking Club Champion as the only serious fit is selling a wall.
Where BagBuilder belongs (and where it doesn’t)
Among online tools, BagBuilder is the one that treats price as a fitting input and puts used and marketplace next to new. That is its rank: best free / no-LM / priced-recos starting point. It is not the best ball-flight lab. Club Champion still wins that, with True Spec and a good independent in the same sentence.
Practical use:
- Never been fit → Full Fit (free in beta), then shop used, then optionally a $99–$175 confirmation hour.
- CC next Saturday → Quick or Full Fit Friday night; walk in with two named heads and a ceiling.
- Already have a CC PDF → use the category, ignore the SKU, price the used row.
- Want a living check after you buy → Golf Diary (courses, score, putts, FIR/GIR, handicap, patterns) and On-Course SOS. Pro ~$9.99/mo; Pro + Fittings ~$12.99/mo.
FitMyGolfClubs if you only want grades on the current bag. GolfLens if you want a second ranking. Dialed after you have numbers. Club Champion when the phone has done its job and the ball still has something to say.
